Fabric Collage with Ginger Scott

At our May meeting we were fortunate to have Guild member Ginger Scott give a lecture and workshop on fabric collage. Ginger’s skills were honed after completing a few projects inspired by the collage techniques of Sue Carlson and Laura Heine. After that she decided to try her hand at her own designs and created the quilt “Tilly” based on her dress form.

She is currently working on a vintage truck quilt.She shared her design process through a slide show detailing the evolution of this quilt. Next day at the workshop, held at Sew Jersey, the lucky participants got to try their hand with this creative process.

It starts with a simple pencil outline of a design, transferred onto your base fabric.Then you cut specific pieces out of fabric to fill in your shape (it really helps to have a nice selection of interesting prints!)

You then back the shapes with Steam a Seam which give them a tackiness so you can place them on your ground and try them in various locations. When you have settled on a final placement you heat set the fabric. Your own sense of creativity and play is what makes these pieces so joyful to look at.
