Lecture:  From Inspiration to Art process

Designer Rachel Derstine delivers a power point presentation on where she finds inspiration for her art: other artists, photographs, and influences from life experiences. Additionally, Rachel will discuss how to make effective quilts using art concepts, such as limiting color palette, simplifying the background, and using repetition of line, shape, values and color throughout the work.

WorkshopKeep It Simple But Pack a Punch

Participants learn how to create beautifully simple but compelling quilts through color, values and design concepts, then sketch out a rough design on paper, keeping in mind that “simple” often makes a more powerful statement than “busy.”

The class will involve mostly improv quilting without a ruler using hand dyed or commercial fabrics: an interesting focal fabric and various values in other hand dyes, batiks, silks or prints.   Gradient fabrics are especially effective for this type of quilt.
Pre-class viewing of Rachel’s short video may be helpful: https://vimeo.com/591124840/783e632ebe.

Lecture: Quilting in Today’s Japan

A 25-year resident of Japan, Maria Naito’s Zoom lecture provides a little glimpse of everyday life in Japan, and many photos of the amazing Japanese quilts from the various quilt shows she has been lucky enough to see.  She also will talk about how Japanese art and culture developed over the last century, and how quilting, especially, found fame internationally. She explains the system of how quilters may study for many years under a Sensei. Finally, she’ll share the types of fabrics Japanese quilters often use, and GS Quilters will be able to see all these used in her detailed close-up photos.

Charity Sit & Sew

We’re kicking off the Season of Giving with some giving of our own when Sunshine hosts our annual charity sewing project. This year we’ll be making comfort pillows for veterans and those recovering from surgery.  Work stations will be set up around the meeting room for members to construct the pillows assembly-line style -- from cutting out to sewing, stuffing and hand sewing the pillows closed, plus a table for writing notes to accompany them.  No need to bring any supplies or tools -- Sunshine will provide everything needed to make them.
